"Poetry is a sword of lightning, ever unsheathed, which consumes the scabbard that would contain it." Percy Shelley
Falling Text - Illuminating The House on Mango Street - Long Term Project: The House on Mango Street naturally lends itself to an Illuminated Text Project. The novel truly is a long, prose poem - and the words just naturally flow into images and movement. And it was one of the original novels that I had an Illuminated Text project attached to. However, when the novel got moved to the end of the year - rather than being at the beginning, it conflicted with other projects (the Civil Rights Newspaper - and in later years: the end of the year Illuminated Text Project. And yet, it remains perhaps one of the most adaptable books to use for an Illuminated Text. By using the original handout, along with the tutorial and later handouts for other books, it becomes more than doable.
The handout here is very old and contains some outdated information about creating Illuminated Texts. For something more recent, I suggest that you see the Illuminated Text Project for The History of Love. There is a handout on that page (that project) that can be easily adapted to The House on Mango Street.
Falling Text - The Illuminated House on Mango Street Handout Docx PDF
See the Illuminated Text Project for The History of Love - for more recent, technology-up-to-date handouts.
This two-page handout goes into great detail about how to pick the work; how to find out information on creating Illuminated Texts; even how to choose a partner wisely (it takes a lot of work on both students' part).
I've also included some older, helpful handouts: What Makes a Great Illuminated Text Docx PDF
And for teachers to help grade and keep track of things: Illuminated Text Grade Sheet Docx PDF
More Handouts can be found on the Illuminated Text page
What an incredible Illuminated Text! It does everything that a good Illuminated Text should do - it explicates what happens in the text that it covers, it gives a personal interpretation by the artists that created it (Norberto & Dan), and it leaves the viewer feeling that they knew more and in a different way - than they did before they saw it.
By having the Handouts available for students - and then showing and watching together (very easy to do in Zoom or Google Meet) - first some general examples (like "Cat in the Rain") and the ones above. While showing them - I kept the chat open so we could talk about things to look for - students also dm'd each other to find a partner to work with.
Coming Back - The House on Mango Street Final Class Discussion
I will look for more examples of Illuminated Texts - till then you can see many (from different works at our Illuminated Text page. However, I must admit that I had created an example to show the class - and the first year that I showed it - the example found above by Norberto and Danny was shown - on the same piece of text - and quite simply, they put my own version to shame. So well done! And - by the way - I never felt bad when corrected by students - or, as in this case, outshone. That is, after all, the point.
