British Literature Lessons/Handouts
"And when I am forgotten, as I shall be, and asleep in dull cold marble, where no mention of me must be hear of, say, I taught thee." Shakespeare, Henry VIII“
These are the lessons that I used when I taught British Literature (Junior year at my school). The Lessons are arranged by Unit (big and small), and the Units are arranged - for the most part - chronologically as I taught them throughout the year. For British Literature, that also means that they are chronological in time - as they (the literature) was written. However, I also liked to bring in modern versions of the story (ie. Grendel during our Beowulf unit). I believe very strongly in the power of connections - and you will find (I hope) that the units are connected with bigger ideas that cross both political and literary boundaries. Most, if not all, of my lessons are designed around the text being studied - with the upmost importance being given to the author's words. I hope you find something useful.
