Deor - the poem, Old English and Modern Translations

an old Anglo Saxon tapestry of the Scop at courtDeor is the most important poem that I teach all year, and it is taught on the first day of school.  It is important not only for its content ("This too shall pass"), but perhaps even more so for the idea that though this poem is one of the oldest poems written in English (Old English), it still packs an awesome punch -- that resonates today. 

 The poem is read after I talk to the class about how I often have arguments with colleagues who believe that we shouldn't teach any work older than the 20th century as it has nothing to say to kids today.  When I get to the part in "Deor" when the poet speaks of a girl who felt guilty because she was more worried about her pregnancy than her brother's death -- there is a collective sigh of student understanding.

The Spite of Fortune: A Flash Illuminated Text of Shakespeare's Sonnet 90

a heart shaped pocket watchMark Hermanson and Aaron Fioritto use Adobe's Flash here for great effect.  One of the most amazing things about these Flash-based Illuminated Texts is that the students were learning the program as they were trying to put together their presentation.  Through their use of effects such as an animated clock, a sorrow-changing heart, and their use of fades for very specific pieces of text -- it is clear that they learned their lesson well.

No Man is An Island - Dr. Matthew

 This is a multi-faceted assignment that combines group work, computer research, and digital imaging. The assignment begins with students working on a group work on John Donne's Meditation 17. As they work on this, a list is created in the classroom where students name people that they feel have lived and died on the earth, and have made the world a better place for having lived in it. The diverse list that has been created over the past three years has included Dr. Martin Luther King, Jim Henson, Gahndi, and over 200 other names (the list grows every year). While the students work on their cooperative assignment, the teacher googles the names he has been given and copies images of these people into a folder on the computer.

About three quarters of the way through the class period, the teacher plays a recording about Dr. Matthew Lukwiya:

Beowulf, Heroism, and 9/11 - A Presentation

 This brief slide show begins with the moving, translated words of Beowulf where he states that he would not race ahead of his friend Brecca, because he had promised him he would stay by his side.  The presentation next recounts some of the heroes of 9/11while subtly (I hope) comparing it ideas of heroism from Beowulf.  It ends with the fiery funeral of Beowulf and the casket of the last 9/11 firefighter being carried away on his fire truck.  This is used with a group work on the same subject.

 A presentation that I created to use in introducing students to the Illluminated Text concept during their studies of Renaissance Poetry.  Though the poem is modern (and American), it is taught in conjunction with a poem by Sidney. 1 After viewing the presentation, I ask that  you either comment on the presentation (below) or leave a message on the Guest Book (above).

Macbeth Made Easy - Group Work

 A lesson as tied to the idea of the "text centered classroom" as anything else you will find at this website. It also owes most of its ideas to Stephen Booth. This group work (designed for 4-5 students) tries to show students in three parts (one done in front of the other) -- exactly why it is not a good idea to paraphrase Shakespeare --

Cat in the Rain by Jenny Lee

 The Illuminated Text that convinced me of the power and potential of the medium.  This project explicates the short story "Cat in the Rain" from In Our Time.  It was created by Jenny Lee at Whitney Young Magnet High School.  One year and a half after this site opened, someone asked me how  got the idea for Illuminated Texts -- the answer for that one is easy: I saw Jenny Lee's "Cat in the Rain."

The Proverbs of Hell - Enough is not Enough

 This work which may be done in partners or alone begins by assigning students certain of William Blake's "Proverbs of Hell."  While all students will receive his more well known (and perhaps important) proverbs, the rest of the proverbs are divided among the students.

a drawing of Hamlet's father ghost appearing in Act 1, scene 1This animation of Act 1, Scene 1 of Hamlet is done with skill, wit, and creativity by Kerry Ferrantella and his classmates.  Kerry used the free program Windows Movie Maker to animate the still drawings that he had created and then they created the voice overs.  The overall effect is astonishing and original.  Mr. Ferrantella's teacher is Ian McCarthy, also of Whitney Young High School -- and I am greatful to him and Kerry for allowing us to share this on the website.  I can't wait to use the project with my own students.  Be patient when you click on the link below -- it is a large file and may take a minute to load.

Frederigo's Falcon (from the Decameron) - Group Work

   Though this work is Italian, I usually teach it directly after we study The Canterbury Tales, as Chaucer was influenced so heavily by The Decameron.  This is a cooperative exercise designed to be completed by 3-4 students in one class period.
